💡 Scholarship Quick Facts

What Scholarships Are Available to Nepali Students?

  • Chevening — Full funding (tuition + living + flights). Requires 2 years' work experience. Deadline: November.
  • Commonwealth — Full funding for master's & PhD. No work experience required. Applied via UGC Nepal.
  • Great Scholarships — £10,000 tuition reduction. British Council partnership. 20+ universities.
  • UEL — £2,000/year for UG, £3,000/year for PG. Specific scholarship framework for Nepali students.
  • University merit awards — £2,000–£10,000. Many are automatic on admission for strong CGPA.
  • You can apply for multiple scholarships simultaneously — always check stacking rules.
⚠️ Important (June 2026): Scholarship holders are not exempt from the UKVI RAG system. If your host university enters Amber tier, CAS issuance is frozen — even for Chevening and Great Scholarship awardees. Always verify your host university's compliance status before confirming your scholarship acceptance.

5. How to Win a UK Scholarship

1
Start 3–6 months before the deadline

Chevening requires 4 essays and references. Starting late is the single most common reason for weak applications.

2
Tailor your statement to each scholarship's values

Chevening = leadership. Commonwealth = academic excellence + development. Great Scholarships = subject motivation. Never recycle the same statement.

3
Be specific about your Nepal development plan

Both Chevening and Commonwealth require return to Nepal. Generic "I will help Nepal" statements are the most common rejection reason. Be precise about which sector, which role, which measurable impact.

4
Apply to university awards simultaneously

While awaiting government scholarship results, apply for university merit awards. Many are automatic — no extra effort — and significantly reduce your funding gap.

6. Scholarship FAQs

Yes — and you should. Chevening recommends applying to multiple universities. Most university awards are compatible with government scholarships. Check stacking rules: if you receive full Chevening funding, a university award may not be payable on top, but having it as backup is always worth applying for.
Minimum IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 5.5). However, most successful Nepali Chevening applicants present 7.0 or above. Your score must be valid (within 2 years) at time of visa application. See our IELTS guide for test centres in Kathmandu and Pokhara.
No — unlike Chevening, Commonwealth Scholarships do not require work experience for master's level applications. They place greater weight on academic excellence and evidence that your studies will contribute to Nepal's development goals.
Chevening and Commonwealth cover the IHS (£776/year) and may cover the visa fee (£558). University-only awards typically cover tuition reduction only — you still pay the visa fee and IHS. Always check the full scholarship terms. See our UK visa guide for all 2026 fee details.
