In brief

Estimate living costs for the campus and housing you will actually use. Add the contract period, bills, travel and everyday expenses; a visa maintenance figure is not a personalized living-cost quotation.

Start with the study campus

Use the address of the teaching campus, not simply the university brand. Some institutions teach in more than one city. A course delivered in a London campus can have a different housing and travel plan from another course offered by the same institution outside London.

Check the likely journey from accommodation to the course buildings. Compare rent and transport together: a lower room price can come with a longer or more expensive commute. Consider the timetable, accessible travel options and any placement location before signing a contract.

Compare housing contracts consistently

The relevant cost is the room price multiplied by the actual contract period, plus any excluded bills and required payments. Record whether a figure is weekly or monthly and whether it includes utilities. Ask about deposits, guarantors, advance rent and cancellation terms.

A short undergraduate-style contract may not cover a full masters study period. Check when you need to arrive and when the course ends. If there is a gap between contracts, include temporary accommodation or storage in your cash plan instead of assuming it will cost nothing.

  • Use the university accommodation page as a starting source.
  • Check the exact room type and contract dates.
  • Identify bills, laundry, internet and other charges.
  • Keep refundable deposits separate from recurring expenses.
  • Verify the provider and payment instructions before sending funds.

Build an everyday expense allowance

Create separate lines for food, travel, mobile service, course materials, clothing and personal expenses. Some items vary with lifestyle and access needs. Prepare a central estimate and a higher-cost scenario so that one rent increase or unexpected journey does not invalidate the whole plan.

Add one-off expenses for arrival and settling in. The British Council cost guide is useful background, but a national average cannot quote your chosen room or course. Replace generic assumptions with current provider information where you can.

Budget for the whole study period

Use the number of months you need to support yourself, including any period before or after teaching when you will remain in the UK. Check whether an extended course or placement route changes the housing requirement and additional tuition. Do not assume a placement will produce income.

Keep the personal spending budget separate from visa financial evidence. Government maintenance requirements serve an immigration purpose and can change. Use the calculator to explore your own living-cost assumptions, then discuss the resulting affordability with those funding your study.

Common questions

Is studying outside London always cheaper?

It can change the budget, but the answer depends on the actual course, rent, transport and duration. Compare complete scenarios rather than city labels alone.

Can I use the visa maintenance amount as my living budget?

Treat it as an immigration evidence figure. Your real housing and spending needs require a separate calculation.

Should I subtract expected part-time earnings?

Build a plan that can work without unconfirmed income. Employment availability, permitted hours and your study workload can vary.
