Start with the course and campus, confirm how the university assesses your Nepali qualifications, and build a complete budget. Admission, a scholarship decision and a Student visa are separate steps, each with its own evidence and conditions.
Choose a course before choosing a university name
Write down the subject you want to study, your current qualification and the work you hope the degree will support. Compare module content, assessment, campus, duration and entry requirements. A university can teach different courses at different locations, so its name alone does not tell you where you will live or what you will pay.
For undergraduate study, check the course's application route and current UCAS deadlines. For postgraduate study, follow the institution's stated application process. Ask admissions how it evaluates your exact Nepali qualification and awarding institution. Do not assume that a general percentage or GPA conversion applies to every university or subject.
Check academic and English conditions together
Read the course page and the university's Nepal-specific requirements where available. Check required subjects, qualification level, grades, portfolios, experience and any professional conditions. A conditional offer is a useful next step, but you still need to satisfy the conditions by the university's deadline.
English evidence varies by course and institution. An advertised IELTS alternative does not mean that every applicant can study without demonstrating English. Confirm the accepted test, component scores, validity and any waiver in writing. Keep the university's admissions requirement separate from the English requirement for the immigration route.
Build a budget for the period you will actually study
Record the international tuition fee for your course, campus and intake. Establish whether it covers one year or the whole programme. Add accommodation, other living costs, travel, immigration charges, study materials and an allowance for unexpected expenses. Compare courses using the same period and explain any differences in duration.
Check whether a scholarship is automatic, competitive or conditional. Read its deadline, eligible courses, payment timing and rules on combining awards. Use the amount confirmed for you in a planning budget; an advertised maximum award is not an individual entitlement. A tuition deposit normally changes when tuition is paid rather than adding another tuition charge.
Prepare the Student visa evidence as a separate task
The Student route requires an eligible course with a licensed sponsor, the relevant English standard and financial evidence where required. Follow the university's steps for a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, known as a CAS. Review the CAS details against your passport, course, campus and payments before applying.
The financial requirement is not a personal living-cost forecast. Official rules specify what amounts and evidence apply, with conditions on the form and timing of funds. Our financial-requirements guide explains the standard questions to check. Use GOV.UK for the current rule and obtain advice for circumstances outside that guide's scope.
Treat work and post-study options as conditional
Do not build the essential study budget around finding a job. Employment depends on your permission, course conditions, timetable and the jobs available. Check your actual visa conditions and the university's term dates before accepting work.
Graduate visa duration currently depends on the application date and qualification. GOV.UK states two years for eligible applications made on or before 31 December 2026, eighteen months from 1 January 2027, and three years for a PhD or other doctoral qualification. Eligibility still has to be met. These rules can change before a future applicant finishes a course.
Prepare a clear application file in Nepal
Keep one consistent set of documents and a dated record of submissions. Explain academic or employment gaps accurately and retain supporting evidence. Follow the university and visa service's requirements for translations, document formats and further checks.
- Check passport names and dates against certificates, transcripts and application forms.
- Collect the academic record, references and course-specific documents requested by admissions.
- Record English evidence, offer conditions, payment deadlines and refund terms.
- Keep financial-source evidence and payment receipts accessible for the relevant checks.
- Arrange accommodation and travel against confirmed study and permission dates.
Common questions
Is a university offer enough to get a UK Student visa?
No. An offer is an admissions decision. You must complete the sponsor's CAS process and meet the applicable Student visa requirements, including the relevant evidence and conditions.
Can a Nepali student apply without IELTS?
Some courses accept other English evidence or a specific waiver. Check the individual course, your circumstances and the visa English requirement. There is no universal exemption for applicants from Nepal.
Should I compare tuition fees or total study costs?
Compare both. Tuition is a course charge; your overall budget also needs accommodation, other living costs and one-off expenses for a clearly stated period.
