In brief

Select a course with an approved provider, confirm how your qualifications and English evidence are assessed, and plan tuition and living expenses. Use Immigration New Zealand's current requirements for the student-visa route that fits your funding and study.

Understand the qualification and provider

Compare qualification level, subject content, study mode and programme length. A diploma, bachelor's degree, postgraduate qualification and research programme should be assessed against different academic and career goals. Use the official Study with New Zealand course resources and check the provider's own entry requirements.

NZQA provides a directory of education organizations and information about qualifications and quality requirements. Check the provider and the relevant approval information, and ask how your exact Nepali qualification is assessed. Do not assume that an unrelated overseas equivalency chart determines admission to a particular course.

Create a complete NZD funding plan

Read the international tuition amount for the course and intake, noting whether it covers one year or the full programme. Add accommodation, other living expenses, insurance, travel, study materials and initial setup costs. Align your accommodation and living-cost periods with the full time you expect to be there.

Use the official scholarship search and the provider's award terms. Check the applicant-country and study-level rules, closing dates, selection process and payment schedule. A listed scholarship is an opportunity to investigate, not confirmation that a Nepali applicant qualifies. Keep any approximate NPR conversion dated and allow for payment costs.

Match the visa application to your funding

Immigration New Zealand's Fee Paying Student Visa is intended for students paying international tuition themselves or through family, a loan or partial scholarship. Its requirements include an offer from an approved provider, tuition and living-cost funding, acceptable insurance and the other applicable visa conditions.

Read the official student-funds guidance before deciding when to pay tuition. It describes an approval-in-principle option for some applicants applying outside New Zealand. Confirm the process that applies to you, keep the provider's payment deadlines and refund rules in view, and do not treat an admissions offer as permission to travel.

Check English evidence and prepare documents in Nepal

Check the programme's academic and English conditions together. NZQA publishes English-language entry requirements for international students in the relevant tertiary context, while providers specify the evidence applicable to their programmes. Confirm the accepted test or other evidence, component conditions and validity rather than assuming a universal IELTS waiver.

  • Prepare your passport, transcripts, qualification certificates and requested translations.
  • Keep an accurate explanation of previous study, employment and any gaps.
  • Record the offer conditions, course dates, funding source and any scholarship conditions.
  • Retain financial evidence, receipts and the insurance arrangements relevant to the application.

Plan arrival and check the actual visa conditions

Arrange accommodation and arrival logistics against confirmed course and permission dates. Read the conditions on the visa you receive, including any work permission, rather than using another student's experience. Research later work routes separately: completing a qualification does not automatically establish eligibility for every post-study option.

Common questions

Must I always pay all tuition before a New Zealand visa decision?

Check the official student-funds rules and your circumstances. Immigration New Zealand describes an approval-in-principle option for some applications made outside New Zealand; payment and provider deadlines still need careful coordination.

Are all scholarships listed online available to Nepali students?

No. Read nationality, qualification, subject and intake conditions on the actual award page, and obtain a formal decision before including an award as confirmed funding.
