In brief

New Zealand fee comparisons must match the number of qualification points as well as the year. A 120-point fee, a 180-point estimate and a yearly living-funds requirement cannot be treated as equivalent prices.

Compare points before comparing prices

Start with the credits or points required for your admission route. A university can publish both 120-point and 180-point prices under one qualification name. Those figures cover different amounts of study, so choosing the smaller number without confirming eligibility creates a misleading budget. Ask admissions to confirm your route in writing against your actual prior qualification.

Keep the programme tuition period separate from calendar duration. A 180-point qualification may be completed over a different number of months depending on delivery and entry arrangements. For affordability, you need both the amount of teaching you are buying and the months of housing and everyday expenses that accompany it. A longer route can cost more overall even when its annual tuition looks similar.

Published 2027 programme and points-based examples

Whitireia and WelTec lists its Master of Management at NZD40,500 indicative international tuition for 2027. The page explicitly says this fee covers the 180-credit, 18-month programme, while exclusions must be checked in the terms and conditions. Its listed 2027 international start dates are at Petone; verify the current offer rather than assuming every management programme is taught in central Wellington.

Waikato lists approximate 2027 tuition of NZD62,748 for the 180-point Master of Business and Management and the same amount for the 180-point Master of Management. Its general table describes 180-point masters as taking one to two years. Confirm the course-specific timetable and entry route before choosing the housing period. These prices are examples, not a declaration of the cheapest providers.

Understand estimates, paper selection and exclusions

Waikato explains that fees are calculated on a per-paper basis. Its published qualification amounts are approximate and the final fee can vary with enrolment. Keep a list of the papers and points used in an individual quotation, particularly where a research project, specialisation or credit recognition changes the study plan. A comparison becomes useful when the two options cover genuinely equivalent qualifications.

Ask whether insurance, student services, equipment and programme-specific expenses are included. For the WelTec example, the tuition page directs applicants to its terms and conditions for exclusions. Do not subtract a possible study grant simply because the page mentions availability: obtain the individual eligibility decision and award amount first.

Keep immigration funds and housing quotes separate

Immigration New Zealand currently states NZD20,000 per year for tertiary-level living costs where study lasts a year or more, or NZD1,667 per month for a shorter period. This is a funds requirement rather than a quotation for your accommodation and lifestyle. Tuition and outward travel arrangements require separate attention under the applicable instructions.

Research housing for the actual campus and all required months, including any gap between arrival and the start of a tenancy. Check whether utilities, internet, furnishings and transport are included in the price. A refundable housing deposit still needs cash at the time of payment, even if you exclude it from the final consumed-cost total. Keep that distinction visible in your planning notes.

Make the Nepal funding plan match the offer

Use NZD for the underlying budget and a dated planning rate for the NPR conversion. Ask the remitting bank how transfer charges, exchange-rate changes and payment processing affect the amount received. Keep the student name, reference number and institutional payment instructions consistent, and confirm bank details through an official channel before a transfer.

Compare academic suitability alongside cost: the route may include coursework, a thesis or an applied project, and that can affect supervision, workload and completion planning. Read refund and deferral terms before paying. Treat employment and later visa options as conditional outcomes, and secure funding for essential study costs without counting income that has not been earned.

Keep a comparable decision sheet

For each offer, retain the programme points, actual teaching period, gross tuition, confirmed grant and housing contract length in one dated record. If a point total or campus changes, revisit the full budget rather than replacing only the tuition number. Ask for a revised quotation when the original estimate no longer matches your enrolment, and keep the earlier version so you can explain why the decision changed.

Common questions

Is a 120-point fee the full cost of my masters?

Only if that is the route you are admitted to. Confirm the required points and any qualifying study before using the figure.

Are New Zealand living-funds requirements enough to cover all costs?

They are an immigration requirement. Actual living costs may differ, and tuition and travel are separate considerations.

Can I deduct an advertised study grant?

Use the amount only when the institution confirms your eligibility, award value and conditions.
