In brief

Build a programme shortlist around academic fit, total cost and available funding. Check institution-specific admissions, confirm the school can enrol international students, and follow the correct student-visa process after admission.

Define the degree and academic fit

Research the subject, qualification, campus and degree structure before comparing institutional names. Look at required modules, opportunities to change a major, research interests and the support available to international students. At graduate level, check whether a course is taught, research-based or designed for applicants with professional experience.

EducationUSA recommends researching options, financing study, completing applications, applying for the student visa and preparing to depart as separate stages. Use its guidance to organize the process, then follow each institution's current admissions page. Deadlines, essays, recommendations and testing requirements can differ substantially.

Prepare each application from its own requirements

Check how the institution evaluates your Nepali qualification, transcript and grading system. Ask whether it requires original or verified records, translations or another form of credential assessment. Do not order additional services unless the receiving institution requests or accepts them.

Check English requirements and any relevant admissions tests directly. A test-optional policy for one purpose does not necessarily remove English evidence or programme prerequisites. Plan enough time for references, essays and score reporting; copying a single generic statement across different programmes can leave important questions unanswered.

Compare net cost and the conditions of aid

Compare tuition, mandatory fees, accommodation, food, health insurance, materials and travel for the same period. A headline annual tuition fee is not the full cost of a multi-year degree. Ask whether fees may rise and whether a funding offer is renewable, conditional on grades or restricted to particular expenses.

EducationUSA advises starting funding research early and considering financial aid alongside admission applications. Check university scholarships and, where relevant, graduate assistantships through the institution. Confirm whether a funding decision is complete before treating it as money available to pay a bill. Keep the original USD amounts beside dated NPR planning conversions.

Check the school and student-visa route

Use the Department of Homeland Security's School Search to verify SEVP certification for the school or programme you are considering. This check concerns eligibility to enrol the relevant international students; evaluate academic recognition and course quality separately.

For the usual F-1 academic route, an admitted student receives a Form I-20 through the school and follows the relevant SEVIS and visa application steps. The Department of State explains that the course and school determine the appropriate visa category. Follow the current embassy instructions for the application, documents and interview process rather than assuming an offer guarantees a visa.

Keep an organized evidence file

Use a checklist for every institution and a separate checklist for immigration. Review the funding plan with the person or organization providing the money. Treat potential employment and later immigration options as conditional rather than essential funding for the degree.

  • Keep passport, academic records and names consistent across submissions.
  • Record programme deadlines, test requirements and reference arrangements.
  • Save written aid terms, cost estimates and evidence of available funding.
  • Check the Form I-20, application details and official appointment instructions carefully.

Common questions

Does admission to a US university guarantee a student visa?

No. Admission and the student-visa decision are separate processes. Follow the current Department of State and embassy requirements for your situation.

Should I apply for financial aid after admission?

Check the institution's deadlines early. Aid applications may need to accompany or precede the admissions decision, and renewal or eligibility conditions can affect the real cost.
