US study costs often depend on credit hours, residency classification and the academic calendar. Use a specific degree plan and the international cost-of-attendance estimate, then verify funding rather than relying on a low online or resident tuition rate.
Match credit load, delivery and fee category
US institutions may advertise tuition per credit hour, per semester or per academic year. Start with the number of credits required for the named degree and the rate that applies to an international student taking the intended on-campus courses. A resident rate or an online-only price should not be used as a substitute for the actual immigration-compatible study plan.
Fort Hays State University explicitly classifies international students as non-resident for tuition calculation. Its graduate page gives an estimated USD7,009.29 for a nine-credit on-campus non-resident semester. Keep that number separate from its international annual cost estimate: the pages describe different scopes and may use rounded or separately maintained assumptions. Request a current individual quotation before committing funds.
A named degree and an annual estimate answer different questions
The FHSU Master of Science in Biology is a thirty-credit, on-campus programme; the department describes the traditional route as two years. Its public programme page also displays a resident-based tuition estimate, so an international applicant must use the non-resident classification rather than copying the lowest displayed amount. Thirty required credits should not be confused with thirty-six credits obtained by assuming nine credits in each of four semesters.
The university international graduate estimate lists USD14,022 tuition and fees for two semesters and eighteen credit hours. It gives USD28,637 as the total estimate, including orientation, room and board, insurance, books and supplies. This is an institutional planning estimate, not the verified whole cost of the Biology degree. The room-and-board component explicitly covers nine months, so investigate summer housing and other uncovered periods.
| FHSU research item | Published amount / structure | Scope limitation |
|---|---|---|
| MS Biology | 30 credits; traditional route described as two years | International tuition requires non-resident assessment |
| Graduate international tuition and fees estimate | USD14,022 for two semesters / 18 credits | Not the complete degree price; page year not explicitly labelled |
| Graduate international total estimate | USD28,637 | Includes nine-month room and board; confirm current cohort and summer costs |
Evaluate assistantships as written funding offers
EducationUSA recommends starting graduate funding research early and comparing the financial support available at individual institutions. Teaching and research assistantships can be important, but an opportunity to apply is not an award. Ask whether a package includes a stipend, tuition remission, insurance or only selected charges, and whether it covers summer and every required semester.
FHSU Biology describes graduate teaching assistantships and notes that recipients still pay applicable graduate student fees. Confirm the current amount, appointment workload, renewal criteria and how support interacts with the degree timetable. A funded research route can be financially different from an unfunded taught route, so compare the written net obligation rather than ranking universities by tuition alone.
Extend the budget beyond the academic-year table
A nine-month accommodation estimate does not pay for twelve months of living. Record arrival costs, summer housing, meals outside a meal-plan period and transport between the residence and the teaching or research location. Laboratory or fieldwork commitments may affect where you need to live during breaks. Check the department schedule rather than assuming a long vacation is available.
Insurance, books, orientation and other mandatory charges may already be included in an institution cost-of-attendance estimate. Label included items to avoid adding them twice. At the same time, check whether the estimate excludes international flights, visa-related costs, deposits or research-specific equipment. Separate a refundable deposit from money you expect to spend, while retaining it in the cash-needed-before-arrival calculation.
Keep the funding gap and academic fit visible
Build the underlying plan in USD and convert to NPR with a dated planning rate. Obtain bank guidance for the actual transfer and allow for exchange-rate movement across later semesters. Compare the funds available, confirmed support and remaining gap for each year; a smaller first invoice does not establish that the complete degree is funded.
For a research programme, examine supervision, research interests, facilities and completion expectations as carefully as price. Keep the department acceptance, funding letter and international office cost estimate together, and resolve inconsistencies before payment. This page intentionally uses one researched institution rather than adding unverified university prices to create a longer cheapest-colleges list. Expand the shortlist through official course and funding pages using the same checks.
Record what remains unresolved
Ask the international office to confirm the required financial-certification amount for your actual admission term. Keep that figure alongside the department credit plan and assistantship offer, rather than treating any one document as the complete cost calculation.
Download the international course research sample (CSV). Keep the fee period, cohort limitations and additional-charge notes with every figure.
Common questions
Can I use the resident tuition shown on a US course page?
Only if the institution confirms that classification applies to you. FHSU classifies international students as non-resident for tuition calculation.
Does an assistantship mean a fully funded degree?
Not necessarily. Check stipend, covered fees, duration, summer support and renewal conditions in the written offer.
Why is there only one US institution here?
This release uses a researched example with explicit limitations. It does not invent additional course prices or claim nationwide cheapest-university coverage.
