Choose London around the teaching postcode and the full cost of reaching it. University of Greenwich and University of East London each use several sites, so a London university name does not identify your daily journey, accommodation location or arrival route.
Start with the teaching campus, not a London label
The University of Greenwich lists Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway campuses. Greenwich and Avery Hill are London locations; Medway is in Kent. Read the location on the exact course page before comparing a room or estimating travel. A photograph of the Greenwich riverside buildings does not establish where your lectures will take place.
The University of East London identifies Docklands, Stratford and University Square Stratford as its main campuses. Ask which buildings your course uses, whether teaching spans sites, and where any specialist sessions take place. Record the teaching address beside the course title in your Nepal application shortlist.
Compare housing against that particular address
Greenwich publishes accommodation information separately for its campuses. UEL places its on-campus accommodation at Docklands. A room described as university accommodation may therefore be at a different site from your teaching. Obtain the residence postcode and plan the route to your course building, rather than measuring distance to the university name.
Request a written quote for the intake you will join. Record the room type, bathroom arrangements, catering, included bills, payment dates and contract start and end dates. Compare the total contract cost with a private room quotation on the same basis, including any extra travel needed from each address.
Test the journey using TfL
Use Transport for London’s Journey Planner for the actual weekday and arrival time of a class. Compare rail, Underground, DLR and bus options where available; include walking between stops and the classroom. A cheaper advertised room can change the transport ticket you need and the time available for study.
TfL offers an 18+ Student Oyster photocard subject to residence, enrolment, institution and course conditions. Its advertised saving concerns qualifying Travelcards and Bus & Tram Pass season tickets. Do not apply that percentage automatically to every pay-as-you-go fare. Check eligibility after enrolment and compare the product with your expected journeys.
Plan the airport-to-room journey separately
A London address does not identify your arrival airport or the most suitable route from it. Before booking onward travel, enter the actual airport terminal, landing date and accommodation postcode into the planner. Allow for immigration, baggage collection and transfers, and check the final service rather than assuming transport runs all night.
Confirm the residence’s key-collection hours and procedure for a delayed flight. Save the full address, booking reference and contact number offline. If your arrival precedes the housing contract, obtain a separate temporary accommodation quote and include the additional nights and luggage transfer in the budget.
Build a campus-specific London budget
Create separate lines for tuition, the complete housing contract, regular travel, food, laundry, telephone, study equipment and initial purchases. Use a current university room listing for a defined residence, not a citywide rent claim. A catered quote and a self-catered quote need different food allowances.
For a family funding the plan from Nepal, record the currency conversion date and the amount needed at each payment deadline. Keep a contingency for exchange movements and arrival changes. Do not make essential rent or tuition depend on finding employment after arrival; first establish what the confirmed funding covers.
Use one evidence sheet before making commitments
Keep the offer, course location, fee confirmation, accommodation quote and sample weekday journey together. Ask admissions to confirm any campus ambiguity before paying a non-refundable amount. Check whether enrolment and orientation occur at the teaching campus or another site. These small address checks make the final decision more useful than comparing London universities by brand recognition alone.
Common questions
Is every University of Greenwich course taught in London?
No. Greenwich lists campuses at Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway. Medway is in Kent. Check the course page and offer for the teaching location before choosing housing or calculating travel.
Does a student Oyster card reduce every London fare?
Do not assume so. The 18+ Student Oyster scheme has eligibility conditions, and the stated discount applies to qualifying season-ticket products. Check TfL’s current terms and compare them with pay-as-you-go travel.
Can I choose accommodation before knowing my campus?
You can research options, but confirm the teaching address before committing. Use both postcodes and a realistic class time to assess the full commute and ticket cost.
