Choose a master’s by its content, entry criteria and total cost. Universities assess Nepalese degrees individually, and taught, research and professional programmes can require different qualifications, documents and application steps.
Request an assessment of your actual degree
Record your degree title, awarding university, study duration, overall result and relevant modules. Provide transcripts and explain the grading scale accurately. A published country minimum is only an initial screen: selective courses can require stronger results, a related subject, specific quantitative study or professional experience.
Do not assume all three-year or four-year qualifications receive the same decision. Ask admissions which route applies to your award and whether a pre-master’s pathway is necessary. Keep a written answer linked to the exact course and intake; an informal assessment for one department may not settle another department’s requirements.
Choose between taught and research study
Taught master’s programmes usually organize study around modules and assessed work, often with a dissertation or project. Research programmes place more emphasis on an independent research question and supervision. The degree title alone may not explain the structure, so read the programme specification and contact the academic team where needed.
Compare duration, start dates, attendance, assessment and dissertation expectations. If you want a research route, check supervisor availability, proposal requirements and funding arrangements before applying. For a professional or conversion course, examine prerequisites and intended graduate outcomes. A one-year format is common, but it is not a universal rule.
Build a programme-specific evidence pack
Prepare the documents listed by the university rather than sending a generic bundle. Typical requests can include transcripts, a degree certificate, English evidence, references, a statement and a CV. Research programmes may require a proposal. Edinburgh’s current guidance also explains certified translations where relevant original documents are not in English.
Create a tracker listing the required document, requested format, word limit, deadline and submission status. Ask referees early and check whether references must arrive directly from them. Oxford’s application guidance illustrates why supporting requirements must be read course by course: uploading an extra document cannot replace a required one.
Work backwards from several separate deadlines
Many postgraduate applications are made to the university, but specialist routes can use other systems. Study UK explains that postgraduate processes and deadlines vary. Check the actual application channel and whether the course uses rounds, closes when full or has a fixed final date.
Funding can close before the academic application, and an admission deadline may precede CAS or visa preparation by months. Record scholarship, application, deposit, document and latest-arrival dates separately. If your final results will arrive later, ask whether a conditional offer is possible and when the final evidence must be supplied.
Accept only after comparing the complete offer
Compare the net tuition after confirmed awards, the course’s full duration and realistic living costs. Read the modules and project options alongside your career plan. A similar degree title at two universities can conceal different levels of technical depth, assessment or access to specialist facilities.
Check deposit refund terms, English conditions and any interview before paying. If bringing family is essential, verify the actual Student dependant rules: a taught master’s alone does not establish eligibility. Your practical next action is to send admissions a concise query with your qualification details and the unresolved course-specific question.
Common questions
Does every UK master’s last one year?
No. Duration depends on the programme and mode of study. Check the published full-time or part-time duration, any placement extension and whether international Student sponsorship is offered for that exact route.
Is a pre-master’s compulsory for Nepalese graduates?
No universal rule makes it compulsory. The university decides whether your degree and academic preparation meet the chosen programme’s requirements. Obtain an assessment before adding the cost and duration of a pathway.
Can I apply before receiving my final degree certificate?
Some institutions consider applications with results or documents pending, subject to their conditions. Confirm which interim evidence is accepted and the deadline for supplying final documents; a conditional offer is not a completed CAS process.
