Your application CV should make your preparation easy to assess. Follow the course instructions, prioritize relevant evidence and use a truthful chronology; a postgraduate admissions CV and a job CV can serve different readers.
Start with the programme’s instructions
Check whether a CV is required, optional or specifically excluded. Record the length, format and any questions the university wants answered. A taught master’s application, a doctoral application and an employment application do not need identical documents. The University of Bath’s admissions CV guidance emphasizes academic preparation for master’s study.
Make a private evidence list before choosing a template: qualifications, dates, relevant modules, projects, work and responsibilities. Decide which items demonstrate readiness for the named programme. A shorter document that answers the actual request is more useful than a decorative template with little academic information.
Show what you studied and did
State the qualification title, awarding institution, dates and result accurately. Explain an unfamiliar grading scale with the official transcript or supporting information rather than converting your marks into an invented UK classification. If a qualification is unfinished, label the result as pending or predicted, as appropriate.
Select relevant modules or a dissertation when they add information about your preparation. For a project, describe the question, your own contribution and the method or tools used. Distinguish a classroom exercise from paid client work. Use a measured result only if you can explain how it was obtained.
Connect experience to academic readiness
Work, volunteering and family responsibilities can provide useful context. Give the actual role, organization and dates, then explain a relevant responsibility or outcome. An internship should not be relabelled as a management position. Where a course values professional experience, the admissions team may request references or separate evidence.
Separate software familiarity from demonstrated use. For example, identify a real analysis or design task completed with a tool instead of listing every package you have opened. Include languages with an honest description of proficiency. Do not describe an English test booking as a completed test result.
Keep dates and documents consistent
Use one clear date style throughout, with recent relevant education and experience easy to locate. Explain overlapping study and employment accurately. A gap does not justify inventing a role: a brief factual description is preferable where the application asks you to account for the period.
Compare the CV against transcripts, the application form, your statement and references. Job titles, university names and completion dates should agree. If a translated qualification title differs, retain enough information to identify the original award. Ask your referee before including their contact details and follow the application’s actual reference process.
Export a readable final version
Use clear headings, a comfortable font and a simple reading order. Keep contact information current and omit sensitive identifiers that the CV does not require. Check that text remains selectable after exporting the requested format, and that page breaks do not separate a heading from its evidence.
Read the document as an admissions reader: can they find your qualification, relevant preparation and dates quickly? Correct errors and save the submitted version with the course and date. Your next action is to compare the draft against the university checklist, then resolve missing evidence before uploading it.
Common questions
Is there one compulsory UK student CV format?
No. Follow the institution’s requirements. A clear, relevant document with an accurate chronology matters more than using a universal template.
Do I need work experience for every master’s?
No. Some courses require it and others do not. Read the course criteria, and use academic projects and other genuine preparation where appropriate.
Should I convert my Nepal marks into a UK degree class?
Do not invent an equivalence. Provide the original result and official grading information, and let the institution assess it.
