In brief

Studying without IELTS can be possible where the university accepts suitable alternative English evidence. It does not remove English-language requirements or create a universal visa exemption for Nepali applicants.

Separate university admission from visa evidence

A university decides what evidence it accepts for a particular course. The Student route has its own English rules. GOV.UK permits qualifying higher education providers to assess English for degree-level study, with the required level still applying. Ask how the university will document the evidence it accepts.

A headline such as no IELTS is incomplete without the course, qualification history and alternative assessment. Avoid applying solely because an English-test waiver appears in an advertisement. Check that the course is academically suitable and financially affordable.

Ask what alternative evidence is accepted

Depending on the course and university, an applicant may be asked for a different accepted test, a qualifying English-taught degree, a specific school qualification or another approved assessment. These possibilities are conditional. A medium-of-instruction letter confirms what its issuer states; it does not automatically satisfy every institution or visa route.

Portsmouth states on its researched International Business and Management course page that English-taught degrees from non-majority-English-speaking countries may be considered case by case. This is an example of a conditional institutional policy, not a rule that can be applied to every UK university.

  • Open the course English-language requirements for your intake.
  • Find the university country-specific qualification guidance.
  • Ask whether your particular evidence and completion date are acceptable.
  • Retain a written decision and follow any remaining condition in the offer.

Prepare for the assessment that is actually required

If a university requests an interview or internal language assessment, clarify its purpose and format. An academic interview, credibility interview and English assessment may evaluate different things. Prepare to explain your own education, course choices and plans in clear English rather than memorizing a script.

If a language test is still required, book the correct version and allow time for results or a retake. A test accepted for direct degree entry may not be the version required for a separate pre-sessional or other study route.

Check the final offer and CAS

Review the offer conditions after submitting the alternative evidence. Confirm that the university has actually cleared the English condition rather than merely received the document. At the CAS stage, ask about any inconsistency between the evidence, the offer and the sponsor record.

Use this route because the official requirements fit your evidence, not because it appears to avoid demonstrating English. Strong practical English remains useful for reading, discussion, assessment and everyday life after arrival. Budget for preparation where it would improve your readiness.

Common questions

Is an MOI letter always accepted in the UK?

No. Acceptance depends on the university, course, qualification and any applicable visa requirements. Obtain a decision for your own evidence.

Does no IELTS mean no English assessment?

No. A university may accept a different test or assessment, and the required English standard still matters.

Can a consultancy guarantee an IELTS waiver?

The relevant university decides whether your evidence meets its conditions. Ask for confirmation through an official university channel.
